What This Fabric Is

There is no single material called 'biodegradable sheet mask fabric'. There are three routes, and they behave differently:

  • Bamboo viscose — regenerated cellulose from bamboo pulp. Soft, drapes well, and biodegrades under the right conditions.
  • Cotton pulp / pulp-based spunlace — short cotton or wood pulp fibre, hydroentangled. The closest thing to paper on the face, and the most readily degradable of the three.
  • PLA blends — polylactic acid fibre, usually blended with cellulose for strength. Compostable in industrial conditions, not in a home compost bin.

Which one you should specify depends on the claim you intend to print, not on which sounds greenest. That is the whole subject of this page.

Why Brands Specify It

  • Retail is asking. European and Korean retail chains now put packaging and material questions into supplier questionnaires before listing a mask SKU.
  • Extended producer responsibility costs are real. In several EU markets the material a mask is made from feeds directly into packaging and waste fees.
  • It is a defensible story. 'Our sheet is cellulose, not polyester' is checkable. 'Eco-friendly' is not.
  • The cost gap has narrowed. Pulp-based spunlace is no longer the premium option it was five years ago.

Biodegradable vs Compostable — the Distinction That Decides Your Label

These two words are not interchangeable, and in most markets only one of them is legally defined.

  • 'Biodegradable' has no agreed legal definition in most jurisdictions. It describes a process, not a rate, a timeframe, or an environment. A material can be called biodegradable and still sit in landfill for years.
  • 'Compostable' is defined by a standard. EN 13432 in Europe, ASTM D6400 in the US, and equivalent national standards elsewhere. Passing one of them requires disintegration, biodegradation, ecotoxicity, and heavy-metal limits to be tested together.
  • Industrial and home composting are different claims. PLA typically passes industrial composting (e.g. EN 13432 at 58 °C) but not home composting. Printing 'home compostable' on a PLA sheet is a claim that will not survive scrutiny.
  • Marine biodegradability is a separate test (ASTM D6691 and equivalents). It is not implied by any of the above.
  • The pouch is usually the bigger problem. A cellulose sheet inside a laminated aluminium pouch is not a compostable product, however the sheet is described.

Before you write anything on pack, decide which of these four you can actually support: biodegradable, industrially compostable, home compostable, or bio-based. Only the last one is a materials-origin statement and the easiest to substantiate.

Specifications We Run

  • Fibre — bamboo viscose, cotton pulp, or a cellulose–PLA blend, selected against your claim and your budget
  • Grammage — made to order; pulp-based webs run lighter than viscose for the same coverage, so tell us the target and we confirm the running weight
  • Roll width — set to your die layout
  • Colour — natural off-white; undyed is the honest choice if the claim is about the material
  • Surface — plain, embossed, or perforated
  • Format — roll, flat stack, or cut blanks

Handling and Formulation Notes

  • Pulp-based webs are weaker when wet. They tear more easily on the folding line and at the eye openings. Size the die openings with more allowance than you would for viscose.
  • Bamboo viscose is not automatically the greener choice. It is regenerated cellulose, and the solvent recovery of the process matters more than the word 'bamboo' on the box. If a supplier will not tell you which process, that is the answer.
  • Do not put a degradation timeframe on pack without a test report for that exact construction. The sheet, the grammage, and the fibre blend all change the result. A report for one construction does not transfer to another.
  • Undyed saves you a claim problem. The moment you dye the sheet, the dye becomes part of the compostability question.

Best-Fit Applications

  • Brands selling into EU or Korean retail that already face material questionnaires
  • Masks positioned on material honesty rather than on ingredient stories
  • Refill and low-packaging formats, where the sheet and the pouch are designed together
  • Brands willing to test and state a standard, rather than print a vague green claim

MOQ, Sampling and Lead Time

  • Trial order from 1,000 sheets; bulk from 10,000 sheets
  • Material swatch in 5 working days; cut sample in 15 working days; bulk in 30 working days
  • Daily capacity approximately 2 million sheets, with Korea and Malaysia among our main export markets

FAQ

Is bamboo viscose biodegradable?

It is regenerated cellulose and will biodegrade under composting conditions. Whether you can print the word depends on the test standard your market accepts and on a report for the exact construction you buy — not on the fibre name alone.

Can you supply a compostable sheet?

We can supply cellulose-based and PLA-blend constructions. Tell us which standard you need to meet — EN 13432, ASTM D6400, or another — and we will confirm what documentation we can provide for that construction before you order.

Does the whole product need to be compostable?

If you intend to claim it, yes, and the pouch is the hard part. Most laminated pouches are not compostable. Plan the packaging at the same time as the sheet, or limit the claim to the sheet itself and say so.

Start a Project

Tell us the claim you want to make, the market you sell into, and the standard your retailer or regulator will ask about. Send it to tianyu.maskcloth@gmail.com and we will come back with the construction that can support it — or tell you honestly that none of ours can.
